Joseph VOILAND

Another version states that a German school teacher could not pronounce the French name "Voiland" and changed it to the German pronunciation "Weller". Joseph's children took the name "Weller". Joseph and his wife Sadie are buried in the Manawa, WI cemetery. To reach the cemetery, go south on highway 22 out of Manawa. Cross the bridge and just past the wayside turn right until the fork in the road. Go to the left at the fork and only a short distance you will come upon the cemetery. Looking on the east side of the road they are buried on the extreme north of the cemetery about half way back. In the city of Manawa at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on the corner of S. Bridge & W. 4th Street, there is a stained glass window donated by Joseph Voiland. The church was dedicated in 1894 so it is believed that was the time of the donation. \par \par Our Weller ancestors came from two villages, Essert and Urcerey, which are about 2 miles apart in the Territory of Belfort, in northeastern France. To avoid confusion, let me add that Belfort was formerly part of the department of Haut-Rhin, but when the rest of Alsace-Lorraine, including Haut-Rhin, was captured by the Prussians in the Franco-Prussian War, Belfort held out and remained part of France. When Alsace-Lorraine was won back by the French in World War I, Belfort was retained as a separate territory, or department, (In the U.S. we would call them states) \par \par Joseph Voiland, of Essert, and his bride Sadie Romond, of Urcerey, must have started on their journey to the U.S. almost immediately after their wedding. They arrived in New York City on May 27, 1857 (2 months and one day after they were married). Since the ocean crossing took around 6 weeks and travel in France to a seaport was slow, they could not have wasted any time. \par \par Joseph was the only son of Charles Francois Xavier (Jean Baptiste) Voiland and Adelaide Perrin, but had many sisters. \par \par Sadie Romond, baptized Marie Felicite Romond, came from a family of three girls and three boys. Her two older sisters entered the convent in France. Two of her brothers, Francois (Frank) and Emile had come to the U.S. before her. Frank Romond had landed in New York in 1852 and went directly to Waupaca Co., WI. He married Magdalena Voiland in Lebanon Township of Waupaca Co. I suspect Magdalena was one of Joseph's sisters that I have not found. \par \par Emile, the baby of the family, followed his brother Frank to the U.S. two years later, in Sept. 1854. He lived in New York for a year before coming to Waupaca Co. and settling near his brother. \par \par "Sadie's" parents had died while she was a teenager, so her remaining brother Charles gave her away in marriage. This is the only record I have of Charles, but my guess is that he remained in France. \par \par Joseph and "Sadie", after arriving in New York, traveled to Buffalo, and remained there until passage through the Great Lakes could be obtained. They finally arrived in Little Wolf Twp. of Waupaca Co. in Dec. 1857. About a month later, our ancestor Frank Weller was born. The first of nine children, Frank had three brothers and five sisters, but the two youngest, Cecilia and Alphonse (Alfred), each died before their first birthday. The 1889 plat map shows the Joseph Voiland farm of 80 acres a mile or two east of Bear Lake in Royalton Twp. of Waupaca Co. They sold the farm in 1903 and moved to the village of Royalton. After his wife's death in 1908, he moved to Clintonville and lived with his daughter, Emily (Mrs. Julius Prenzlow). He is listed in the 1910 Lebanon, Waupaca Census as living in the household of his son Gus. \par \par From Census Records, it appears that Frank Weller had cleared and established an 80 acre farm in the town of Royalton more than three years before he married Laura Sophie Heinke, Oct. 30, 1883. \par \par The Friedrick Heinke farm, about 70 acres, through which the Little Wolf River flowed was about 6 miles east of the Joseph Voiland farm, and 3 miles south of the Frank Weller farm. \par \par While many of the Frank Weller's ancestors have been traced back nearly three hundred years, the Heinke's have proven more difficult to trace. \par \par We do know that Friedrick Heinke and his wife and two daughters landed in New York in Oct. 1860. The ship's record indicates that they had been living in Bretwisch (West Pommerania) Prussia (now part of East Germany) before going to Hamburg to board the ship, "Deutchland". They arrived in Eldorado Twp., Fond du Lac Co., WI in the fall of 1860. Three children, Laura, Elisabeth, and Reinhard were born to them while living in Eldorado Twp. In 1879 they moved to the farm mentioned above. Laura would have been 17 at the time. Joseph married Marie Felicitöe ROMOND on 26 Mar 1857 in Essert, Territoire de Belfort, Franche-Comté, France. Marie was born on 03 Apr 1830 in Urcerey, Belfort, France; died on 13 May 1908 in Royalton Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States; was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manawa, Waupaca Co., WI.
